# tp new

> Create an experiment

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
tp new my-grpo --method nemo-rl/grpo
```

Creates `experiments/my-grpo/` with three files:

| File | What it is |
| - | - |
| `config.yaml` | The method template, with the keys people usually change at the top |
| `README.md` | Your notes on this experiment |
| `recipe.lock.json` | The exact recipe and framework version this experiment is pinned to |

Then edit `config.yaml` and run [`tp validate`](https://docs.tuneplane.ai/en/cli/validate).

## Fork an existing experiment

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
tp new my-grpo-v2 --from my-grpo
```

Copies the config and the lock. `--method` is ignored when `--from` is given — the fork keeps the
original's method by definition.

## Pin a framework version

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
tp new my-verl --method verl/grpo --framework-version 0.9.0
```

Must be a version the catalog publishes for that method. [`tp methods`](https://docs.tuneplane.ai/en/cli/methods) lists them.

## `tp new`

Create an experiment

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
tp new <NAME> [options]
```

| Argument | Description |

| `NAME` | Experiment name (**required**) |

| Option | Description |
| - | - |
| `--from` | Fork an existing experiment |
| `--method`, `-m` | Method identifier \<framework>/\<method>; defaults to nemo-rl/grpo, run `tp methods` for the full list (default `nemo-rl/grpo`) |
| `--framework-version` | Exact framework version; must be a version published in the recipe catalog |
